If you want to migrate the system from AIX 4.3 or later to AIX 5.3, then follow the below steps:

NOTE: Make sure that you have the consistent backups of your data and any applications which you have customized. Also, collect the TCP/IP information before you start the migration procedure if you are overwriting the existing system.

Before the migration:

1) Log off all other users except the root user before you start the migration.

2) Check whether the applications are compatible with AIX 5L v5.3.

3) Make sure that the hardware microcode is up-to-date.

4) Make sure that all the hardware including external devices (ex: tape drives) are connected physically and turned on.

5) Ensure that there is sufficient memory and disk space. AIX 5L v5.3 needs 128 MB of memory and 2.2 GB of disk space.

6) Now, run the pre-migration script which is situated in the “mount_point/usr/lpp/bos” directory on the CD. Run the below command to mount the CD:

# mount -v cdrfs -o ro /dev/cdF /mnt

Where F is your CD drive letter.

7) Create the backup of your data and software.

Boot from the AIX CD:

1) Insert the AIX product CD in the drive if it is not already inserted.

2) Reboot the system.

3) Press F5 when you hear the system beeps twice or press 5 on ASCII terminal.

4) Now, press F1 or 1 to select System Console and then hit Enter.

5) Type 1 in the Choice box to select the “English language” for BOS installation and then hit Enter.

6) In the "Welcome to BOS Installation and Maintenance" menu, type 2 in the Choice box to select “Change/Show Installation Settings and Install” and then hit Enter.

7) Now, make sure that the “Method of installation” is set to Migration. If not, select it.

8) Select the disk on which you want to install and continue to the installation.

9) After the completion of installation, select “Primary Language Environment Settings”.

10) If you want to select more options, then type 3 and hit Enter.

11) Now, confirm the selections which you made in the “Migration Installation Summary” and then hit Enter.

12) Now, in the “Migration Confirmation” page, read the instructions carefully whether to list the system information or to simply continue. If you want to list the system information, type appropriate choice and hit Enter or type 0 and hit Enter to continue with the migration without list.

Once migration completes, verify the system configuration by following below steps:

NOTE: Once the migration completes, system will be rebooted.

1) After the reboot, the “Configuration Assistant” opens on graphics display and “Installation Assistant” on ASCII display.

2) Select “Accept Licenses” option.

3) Now, confirm the administrator password and TCP/IP information.

NOTE: If you want to return to the “Configuration Assistant” or “Installation Assistant”, type the below command in the command line:

configassist

Or

smitty assist

4) Now, select “Exit the Configuration Assistant” and hit Next.

5) Now, select Finish in the Configuration Assistant.

WARNING: Don’t start the “Configuration Assistant” when restarting the AIX.

6) After the restart, login with the root username and password.

7) Then, run the below script to carry out the System Administration tasks:

/usr/lpp/bos/post_migration
